Over 20% of Australian internet traffic is to Google. Search engine users prefer organic listings, viewing them as more relevant and often more trustworthy. The top three sites listed in the search results get the vast majority of hits. There is of course the option of boosting your site's prominence on a web page with paid listings; however, the majority of web users can distinguish betwen organic results and listings that are paid for, and paid ads are often ignored.
Search engines work by indexing the web using large clusters of computers, known as bots or spiders, which crawl the web by following links found on web pages. It’s this index that’s queried every time a user performs a search.
This is where Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) comes in. Effective SEO will vastly improve your ratings in search engine results pages. It doesn’t take a genius to work out…
High rankings = MORE visitors that WANT what you HAVE
Now the technical bit….
Our top 5 SEO tips to boost your rankings
1. Make your content accessible
Avoid excessive use of Flash, video, imagery and Javascript to house your most relevant content as this can result in a site that is difficult and often impossible for search engines to access – remember, many search engines can still only read written text on a web page.
2. Make sure your content is targeted.
Think carefully when writing content for your site. Before you start writing, ask yourself: who is my audience for this content? Why should they read this? What keywords should I target?
3. Make sure your Information Architecture is up to scratch
Ensuring that you have clear and logical site navigation and internal linking will make your site easier to use and navigate by search engines and users alike. Important content should be on your homepage and promote links to key sections of the site via dedicated navigation.
4. Eliminate duplicate content
Duplicate content can be caused by the way your server is set up or how your content management system serves up content. Either way, duplicate content is going to do you no favours as far as search is concerned, so get rid of it quick.
5. Monitor your site's performance
Constant monitoring of you site is essential in order to continually improve your rankings. Remember, the real experts on the design of your site are your website visitors. Recording information about your visitors is essential, both in terms of understanding how people are finding your website and what they’re doing there - as well as what might cause them to leave before they've completed the action you want, whether that's to buy a product, sign up for information or share a link with a friend.
